This year, IPHS is rallying around a powerful school-wide reading goal: developing strategic, active readers across every subject area.
Whether a student’s path after high school leads directly into a career, trade school, the military, or college, the ability to read, process, and evaluate complex information is one of the most critical skills they can build. Reading isn't just something we do in English class—it's how we navigate workplace safety manuals, policy documents, science articles, historical texts, and real-world contracts.
Throughout the year, students will practice active reading strategies during Advisory—learning how to preview text features, mark key claims, engage in evidence-based discussions, and synthesize big ideas. Most importantly, the specific habits students build during Advisory will directly translate to their core academic classes. By mastering these universal reading tools, students will be better equipped to tackle complex textbooks, word problems, primary sources, and technical documents in all of their courses. We are excited to watch our students build reading confidence that will serve them across the curriculum and far beyond our doors!
